Katie Gutshall

MS, 4th Year Audiology Extern

Katie is our 4th year extern.  4th year externs have completed all of the classroom requirements to become a doctor of audiology and spend their last year of school in a clinical placement.

Katie is from Rocky Mount, NC and is a student at the University of Tennessee.  Her interest in audiology comes from her own ear-related medical issues as a child.  These challenges inspired her to learn more about how the ear works and how hearing and balance affect our everyday lives.

She says “My favorite part about patient care is collaborating with patients to achieve their goals. I enjoy working with patients to better understand their unique needs and developing a plan tailored to address their personalized goals. Each patient’s journey is different, and being a part of that process, helping them navigate and overcome obstacles, is very rewarding.”

In her free time she enjoys traveling, listening to music and being outdoors.  Katie is happy to be at a clinical placement close to home so she can spend time with family and friends.

Jordan Coates, Coates Hearing clinic co-owner

Jordan Coates

Owner

Jordan was born and raised in Smithfield, NC. After graduating high school in 2003, he left for Chapel Hill to go to college at UNC (Go Heels!) where he received his bachelor’s degree in communications. Jordan completed his MBA with Strayer University in 2021.  He worked for 9 years with the Deacon Jones Automotive family before shifting to the clinic full time.

Jordan is married to Dr. Coates and they live a few miles outside of town on Highway 210 in a house that his grandfather built himself on land that has been owned by his family for generations. It has always been a dream of his to open a service-based business in his hometown. Dr. Coates and Jordan both agreed that there was an unmet need for audiological care in their town, so they opened Coates Hearing Clinic in 2018 to meet that need.

My particular audiology interest is community outreach and educating senior citizens on the importance of hearing health.

Fun fact: both Ann and her husband Anthony were Jordan’s teachers in middle school!  She has graciously agreed not to reveal any insights into what kind of student Jordan was…

Ella Rini

Lab Manager

Ella Rini grew up in Hampstead, NC and recently earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Appalachian State University. Outside of work, she loves to go on breathtaking hikes in the mountains or relax on the beach with a book in her hand. When she’s not outside looking for adventure, she loves to stay in and try new recipes or catch up on her crochet, paint, and sewing projects. She has a strong passion for helping people, specifically in the hearing loss community, as she strongly believes in the importance of communication. The inability to hear can lead to frustration or social isolation, so being able to give back any degree of hearing can greatly impact quality of life. Meeting new people and sharing stories and interests is Ella’s favorite part about seeing patients. She loves being able to listen to patients in order to give them the best experience possible.
