Dr. Kathleen Coates : Audiologist/Owner

Dr. Kathleen Coates

Coates Hearing Clinic, PA | Smithfield Office

Dr. Kathleen Coates was first introduced to the field of audiology when she noticed ringing in her left ear. After many tests and an MRI scan, they found left-sided hearing loss of an unknown cause. She started researching hearing loss and tinnitus and was drawn to the science, technology and research involved with this field of study but also the creative, patient-centered and counseling approach to hearing loss treatment.

Dr. Coates completed 4 years of undergraduate studies with a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science and a minor in aging studies from The Ohio State University. She went on to graduate school for 4 additional years to receive a Doctor of Audiology degree at the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium, which consisted of Kent State University, the University of Akron, and Cleveland Clinic. She finished her clinical externship at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem. She fell in love with NC and fell in love in NC, so she decided to stay.

Prior to opening her own private audiology practice in Smithfield, Dr. Coates worked alongside a world-renowned neurotologist surgeon in Raleigh. She gained years of experience in all aspects of audiology, such as cochlear implants, osseointegrated hearing implants, hearing aids, balance assessment, tinnitus treatment, and facial nerve monitoring during hearing nerve tumor removal surgery in the operating room. However, there was a need in her own community for audiological services, so she was able to fill that need.

Community involvement is important to Dr. Coates. She started the Smithfield Running Club in 2017. She is on the board of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation.  She is a member of the Johnston Network on Aging, Triangle East Chamber of Commerce and NCCARE360. She is also an ambassador for the Dementia Alliance of NC and is on a medical advisory board for Johnston Community College. She also provides free educational seminars for local groups and senior centers through Community and Senior Services of Johnston County.

Dr. Coates and her husband spend their free time renovating their old “fixer-upper” house, built by her husband’s grandparents and spending time with family and friends.

I was born and raised here in Smithfield, NC. After graduating high school in 2003, I left for Chapel Hill to go to college at UNC (Go Heels!). My full time job is as a Sales Manager at Deacon Jones Ford in Goldsboro. I've been working for the Jones family since 2012. We live a few miles outside of town on Highway 210 in a house that my grandfather built himself on land that has been owned by my family for generations. It has always been a dream of mine to open a service-based business in my home town. Kate and I both agreed that there was an unmet need for audiological care in our town, so we opened Coates Hearing Clinic in 2019 to meet that need.
